Hi, I’m Sally Roberts.
I am a 32-year-old home cook and recipe developer living in Austin, Texas.
Meals We Share was born from a simple belief: that the best memories aren’t made in a dining room, but gathered around a crowded kitchen island where the food is hot and the laughter is loud.
The Legend of the Purple Flour Explosion
I was eight years old when I decided to surprise my mother with a batch of “Blueberry Surprise” muffins. The surprise, unfortunately, was for the entire kitchen infrastructure. I had substituted blueberries with a heavy-handed amount of liquid food coloring and forgotten to check the seal on the electric mixer.
Within seconds, a fine indigo mist coated every surface from the ceiling fans to the cat. My mother walked in to find a miniature, blue-tinted chef standing amidst the wreckage. Instead of scolding me, she grabbed a spoon, tasted the raw (and very purple) batter, and said, “A bit heavy on the dye, but the vanilla notes are spot on.”
That afternoon taught me that cooking isn’t about perfection; it is about the courage to make a mess and the joy of finding the humor in the mistakes. Every recipe I share today carries a little bit of that fearless spirit.
My journey into the world of digital food started long before I knew what a blog was. Growing up in a household where the slow cooker was a permanent fixture on the counter, I learned early on that convenience doesn’t have to sacrifice flavor. Some of my fondest memories involve waiting for the lid to rattle on a Creamy Ranch Chicken Crock Pot while I finished my homework nearby.
After moving to Austin, I spent years working in corporate marketing, but I found myself spending my weekends recreating fast-food favorites with a gourmet twist. I became known in my friend group for hosting “Fakeaway Fridays,” where the star of the show was inevitably my Homemade Big Mac Sauce. Seeing my friends’ faces light up when they realized they could make better versions of their cravings at home was my “aha” moment.
What started as a simple Instagram page to document my Sunday meal prep quickly evolved. I realized there were thousands of people looking for the same thing I was: recipes that felt sophisticated but used accessible ingredients found at any local grocery store. I began focusing on “Modern Comfort,” taking traditional family staples and giving them a contemporary lift.
One of the first recipes that really put Meals We Share on the map was my Monterey Sausage Pie. It perfectly encapsulated my philosophy—hearty, dependable, and just unique enough to spark conversation at the dinner table. This blog isn’t just a collection of ingredients; it’s a digital invitation to my home.
Today, I am proud to have turned this hobby into a professional resource for millions of home cooks. While the equipment in my kitchen has certainly upgraded since the purple flour incident, the goal remains exactly the same: to help you create meals that people will talk about long after the plates are cleared.
When I am not developing recipes or wrestling with my DSLR camera, you can usually find me exploring the hidden taco trucks of East Austin or hiking the Barton Creek Greenbelt. I am a firm believer that the best inspiration for a new dish comes from a weekend road trip and a playlist full of 70s folk music.
Common Kitchen Questions
What is your number one tip for new cooks?
Read the entire recipe twice before you even touch a knife. Understanding the flow helps prevent mid-cooking panic!
Can I substitute ingredients in your baking recipes?
Baking is more of a science than a craft, so I recommend following the measurements exactly for the first try. Once you know the texture, feel free to experiment!
What are your must-have kitchen tools?
A sharp chef’s knife, a heavy cast-iron skillet, and a reliable digital meat thermometer are the trio I can’t live without.
Do you offer gluten-free or vegan options?
Many of my recipes include “Make it Your Own” notes at the bottom where I suggest dietary swaps whenever possible.
Who takes the photos for the blog?
I do! Every photo you see on Meals We Share is shot in my home kitchen using natural light and a very patient husband to hold the reflectors.
