Homemade Salisbury Steak

  • Author: Sally Roberts

Description

When comfort food is calling, nothing satisfies quite like Homemade Salisbury Steak. This classic American dish combines juicy seasoned beef patties with a rich mushroom and onion gravy, served hot with a side of creamy mashed potatoes or buttery egg noodles. It’s the perfect weeknight dinner, hearty enough for a Sunday supper yet simple enough for any day of the week.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1 large egg

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

2 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp butter

1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced

8 oz mushrooms, sliced

2 cups beef broth

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp cornstarch

2 tbsp water

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined. Form into 4 equal-sized oval patties.

2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes on each side until browned. Transfer to a plate.

3. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté for 6–8 minutes until golden and softened.

4. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer. Stir in the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water). Let the gravy thicken, about 2–3 minutes.

5. Return patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over the top. Cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes until patties are cooked through.

Notes

Use an 80/20 blend of ground beef for the best flavor and moisture.

If the gravy thickens too much, thin it with extra beef broth.

This recipe can easily be doubled for meal prep or a crowd.
