Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup milk
1 large egg
1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
2 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
2. Form the mixture into 1 1/2-inch meatballs.
3. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown meatballs on all sides. Remove and set aside.
4. In the same skillet, sauté the sliced onion (and mushrooms if using) until soft and golden, about 5-7 minutes.
5. Sprinkle in the flour and stir to coat the onions. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
6. Add the butter, then slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until the gravy thickens.
7. Return the meatballs to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until fully cooked and the gravy is rich and smooth.
8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, noodles, or your favorite side.
Notes
For extra tenderness, don’t overmix the meatball mixture.
You can skip the mushrooms if you’re not a fan—they’re optional but traditional.
Leftovers reheat wonderfully—just warm over low heat with a splash of broth if needed.
