Ingredients

16 oz phyllo dough

2 cups finely chopped apples

1 cup chopped walnuts

0.5 cup packed brown sugar

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg

0.75 cup melted unsalted butter

1 cup pure maple syrup

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

1. In a bowl, mix together chopped apples, chopped walnuts, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.

2. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.

3. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each with melted butter.

4. Spread half the apple mixture evenly over the phyllo.

5. Add another 8 buttered sheets of phyllo on top.

6. Spread remaining apple filling, then top with 8 more buttered sheets.

7. Cut into diamond or square shapes before baking.

8. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

9. While baking, simmer maple syrup with lemon juice.

10. Pour warm syrup evenly over the hot baklava once out of the oven.

11. Let cool completely to allow syrup to soak in.

Notes

Always cut the baklava before baking to keep the layers from breaking.

Pour hot syrup over hot baklava immediately after baking for best absorption.

Use a damp towel to cover phyllo while working to prevent drying out.
