Description

Caramelized Onion Dip is a creamy, savory, make-ahead appetizer loaded with slow-cooked golden onions, tangy sour cream, cream cheese, and fresh chives. This easy recipe is perfect for game day, holiday parties, quick snack boards, appetizer ideas, food ideas, and simple entertaining when you want a rich homemade dip that tastes better than store-bought.

Ingredients

3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

1 cup sour cream

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped

2 tablespoons crispy onions, optional for topping

Instructions

1. Slice the onions thinly and keep the pieces as even as possible so they cook at the same pace.

2. Warm the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

3. Add the sliced onions and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, then stir until the onions are coated.

4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring often, until the onions are soft, golden brown, and jammy.

5. Add a tablespoon of water if the skillet gets too dry, scraping up any browned bits as the onions cook.

6. Remove the caramelized onions from the heat and let them cool for 10 to 15 minutes.

7. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.

8. Stir in the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt.

9. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the creamy base until evenly combined.

10. Chill the dip for at least 30 minutes before serving.

11. Spoon into a serving bowl and top with fresh chives, extra black pepper, and crispy onions if using.

Notes

Let the onions caramelize slowly over medium-low heat; high heat can burn them before they become sweet and jammy.

Cool the onions before mixing them into the creamy base so the dip stays thick and smooth.

For the best flavor, chill the dip for at least 30 minutes, or make it a day ahead and stir before serving.
