Description

This Grilled Gourmet Holiday Edition is a crispy, buttery steak grilled cheese packed with tender beef, sweet onions, and melted Gruyere and provolone. It is an easy dinner, quick lunch, holiday leftover idea, and cozy comfort food recipe that works for family meals, weekend food ideas, and simple dinner ideas when you want something rich, warm, and satisfying.

Ingredients

8 slices thick-cut sourdough or brioche bread

12 ounces cooked steak or roast beef, thinly sliced

1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese

8 slices provolone cheese

4 tablespoons softened butter

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of the butter. Add the sliced onion and salt, then cook for 8 to 10 minutes until softened and lightly golden.

2. Add the sliced steak or roast beef to the skillet with the onions. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper, then warm for 1 to 2 minutes.

3. Spread Dijon mustard on the inside of 4 bread slices. Add provolone, the warm beef and onion mixture, Gruyere, and the remaining bread slices.

4. Mix the remaining softened butter with mayonnaise, then spread it over the outside of each sandwich.

5. Place the sandwiches in a skillet over medium-low heat. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the bread is golden and crisp and the cheese is melted.

6. Rest the sandwiches for 1 minute, then slice and serve warm.

Notes

Use medium-low heat so the bread crisps slowly while the cheese melts fully.

Slice the steak thinly against the grain for the most tender bite.

For extra holiday flavor, add a thin layer of cranberry sauce or horseradish cream inside the sandwich.
