Description

Soft, fluffy London Fog Rolls are a cozy breakfast idea, brunch treat, and easy recipe for anyone who loves Earl Grey tea, vanilla, and lavender. These homemade sweet rolls are filled with buttery brown sugar tea filling, baked until tender, then topped with a creamy lavender glaze for a beautiful food idea that works for quick breakfast planning, weekend baking, dessert tables, and special brunch menus.

Ingredients

1 cup whole milk, warmed

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 large egg

3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon fine salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

3/4 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons finely ground Earl Grey tea leaves

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

4 ounces cream cheese, softened

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

2 tablespoons heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon finely crushed culinary lavender

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tiny drop purple food coloring, optional

Instructions

1. Warm the milk until just slightly warm, then stir in the yeast and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.

2. Add the remaining sugar, melted butter, egg, flour, and salt. Mix until a dough forms, then knead until smooth and elastic.

3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled.

4. Mix softened butter, brown sugar, Earl Grey tea leaves, cinnamon, vanilla, and a pinch of salt into a spreadable filling.

5. Roll the dough into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Spread the filling evenly over the dough.

6. Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into 12 even rolls. Place them in a greased baking dish.

7. Cover and let rise again for 35 to 45 minutes, until puffy.

8. Bake at 350°F for 24 to 28 minutes, or until lightly golden and cooked through.

9. Beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, heavy cream, lavender, vanilla, and optional food coloring until smooth.

10. Spread the glaze over the warm rolls and serve soft and fresh.

Notes

Use culinary lavender only, and crush it finely so the glaze tastes delicate instead of floral-heavy.

Do not overheat the milk, because hot milk can damage the yeast and stop the dough from rising properly.

For overnight rolls, shape them in the pan, cover tightly, refrigerate, then bring to room temperature before baking.
