Description

Southern Cabbage is a quick breakfast side, easy dinner side dish, and comforting easy recipe that turns simple ingredients into one of the best food ideas for family meals. This buttery, tender cabbage is packed with savory onion, garlic, and broth, making it perfect for dinner ideas, holiday spreads, and cozy homemade meals.

Ingredients

1 medium head green cabbage, chopped

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup chicken broth

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

1. Core the cabbage and chop it into bite-size pieces. Slice the onion and mince the garlic.

2. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.

3. Add the sliced onion and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

4. Add the chopped cabbage and toss well to coat it in the butter and onion mixture.

5. Pour in the chicken broth, then season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.

6. Cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the cabbage is tender.

7. Stir in the apple cider vinegar, taste, and adjust seasoning if needed.

8. Serve hot.

Notes

Use a large pan because cabbage cooks down a lot but starts with plenty of volume.

For a deeper Southern flavor, use a little bacon drippings in place of part of the butter.

Do not overcook the cabbage if you want it tender with a bit of texture instead of overly soft.
