Description
These homemade Sloppy Joes from Scratch are saucy, hearty, and packed with classic sweet-and-tangy flavor, making them a quick dinner, easy recipe, family dinner idea, comfort food favorite, and one of the best food ideas for busy weeknights. Tender ground beef simmers in a rich tomato-based sauce with onion, garlic, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and warm spices, then gets piled onto toasted buns for a messy, satisfying sandwich everyone will want again.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
1 small yellow onion, finely diced
1/2 green bell pepper, finely diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
3/4 cup ketchup
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted
1/2 cup sliced pickles, optional
Instructions
1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef, and cook until browned, breaking it into small crumbles as it cooks. Drain excess grease if needed.
2. Add olive oil or butter if the skillet is dry, then stir in the onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until softened.
3. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
4. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute, stirring it into the beef and vegetables.
5. Stir in the ketchup, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
6. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thick and glossy.
7. Toast the hamburger buns while the filling simmers.
8. Spoon the hot Sloppy Joe filling onto the toasted buns, add pickles if desired, and serve warm.
Notes
Use 85/15 or 90/10 ground beef for the best balance of flavor and texture.
Toast the buns before serving so they hold up better under the saucy filling.
For a thicker filling, simmer uncovered a few extra minutes; for a looser filling, add a small splash of water.
